Determining the Right Mattress - Size, Firmness, Type

Getting the bed frame might be easy; all you really have to do is decide which one looks the most appealing to you. When picking out the mattress you want to be more careful, as that's what you're going to actually be sleeping on for the following years. Several factors you need to consider when choosing the mattress that best suits you include the size, firmness, type, and your personal preference.

Size

There are several different sized mattresses that you can choose from. A crib mattress is 28" x 52", a single twin mattress is 39" x 75", a double full mattress is 54" x 75", a long twin mattress is 36" x 80", a queen mattress is 60" x 80", and a king sized mattress is 76" x 80". For babies the crib mattress is ideal, while a single twin mattress is good for children. As children get older, they might want a full mattress, as it allows them more room to move around. For adults, queen sized mattresses and king sized mattresses are generally used. These mattresses are designed for two people, with enough extra room that the other person won't be too crowded, or fall off the other side of the mattress.

Firmness

The firmness is determined differently in the types of mattresses. For innerspring mattresses, created with coils, the number of coils inside the mattress determines the firmness. A firm innerspring mattress is comfortable for people under 90 pounds, having 312 coils. Most people prefer an extra firm mattress with 522 coils, while people with a higher density normally choose a super firm mattress, which contains 1000 coils. In latex mattresses, the firmness depends on the ILD (Initial Load Deflection), or basically the density. The latex mattress with a medium firmness is suitable for people with a lower than average or average build. This mattress has an average ILD of 25, while the firm mattresses and extra firm mattresses have an ILD of 31 and 35 respectively. Firm latex mattresses are more commonly used with people of an average density, while extra firm mattresses are more suitable for people who prefer a hard bed, or have a higher body density.

Types

There are mainly four types of mattresses that you can buy for beds: the innerspring mattress, the latex mattress, the memory foam mattress, and the water mattress. The innerspring mattress is created with an underlayer of coils, and then covered with upholstery. The latex mattress is similar to the innerspring mattress, although it has a latex foam core instead. The memory foam mattress is created entirely of foam, while the water mattress is usually made with alternating layers of water and air. The innerspring mattresses are designed to lift up the body, and are one of the more commonly used mattresses. The latex mattress moulds to fit your body, and provides some pressure relief, along with more comfort. The memory foam mattress is like the latex mattress, only more extreme. It conforms exactly to your body shape, allowing you to sink in. It absorbs movement and also helps your spinal cord. The water mattress has been improved to allow less movement of the other parts of the mattress, and also help reduce backache.

Personal Preference

Choosing the right mattress really depends on what you like. If you're looking for a large two person bed and you have an average body density, then you might want to try out the medium firm latex mattress. Perhaps you just want a bed for yourself that you can sink into and feel extremely relaxed. The full memory foam mattress might be a better choice here. By looking at the different varieties of mattresses, you can narrow down your list to the exact mattress that you want to buy.
